A Footnote to a Footnote

Just to clear up a possible issue in “I’m God and You’re Not” that might be misinterpreted.

At the beginning of Chapter II-Creation, footnote 7 discusses what God actually finds an obscene word to be. In it, some derogatory terms used to describe certain ethnic groups are repeated for illustrative purposes. The author wishes to assure the reader that he purposely used three different groups that make up his own ancestry, as he felt it was wrong to use ethnic slurs used against others. On the whole, he agrees with God’s take on this.

A Letter from God

This is Lucifer speaking.  If you read God’s last post, he’s taking a little break and asked me to keep an eye on you humans while he’s gone.  You may also recall that I am to report back to him on your activities upon his return (and boy, do I have a lot to tell him already which is a bit frightening when you consider he’s been gone less than a week!).

In the meantime, I thought you may be interested in reading a short letter I received via Paradise Post  this morning from the Big Guy…

Hiya, Luce:

Just  hanging around watching a beautiful solar system set over the northern mountains here.  You really should see the display of infinite colors reflected in the lake–definitely one of the best things we put together in those early Creation days. Of course, I won’t tell you where I am.  I really need these moments of privacy every thirty millennium or so or I think I’d go as batshit as some of the humans are.

Oh, speaking of humans…I thought over what you and I were discussing just before I left and I didn’t want to leave you hanging any further.

I still don’t understand what is going on in some areas of the Earth right now.  It’s like some madness has taken over and people are forgetting their basic humanity right now.  I know many of them are frightened; they see their insolated patches of culture and tradition changing before them.  It’s that old story that every civilization has to deal with sooner or later.  You know perfectly well that this irrational fear allows demagogues to manipulate the crowds for their own purposes: it is so easy to deflect people from their real enemy–which is most often the very persons doing the deflecting–to some innocent. You and I have watched this over and over again much too much  in human history.

And always religious texts are manipulated and twisted to support the exact opposite of their intent.  These charlatans are always selecting tiny isolated part of their scripture to justify breaking the first rule of all great religions.  Do I have to repeat it yet again: Love each other.

I’m sickened at how families are being split apart as they seek a better life in a new land, babies, shrieking and wailing,  taken from their mother’s breast while rulers justify this by calling these family illegal and brazenly lying about them, saying that they bring nothing but crime and violence.

And there are so-called “good” Christian leaders who justify it by perverting what their founder preached.  They take a letter from Paul, who as we know, had a number of serious issues–you know the rumors–and justify these atrocities by what he wrote in Romans 13:

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.  Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

Well, you know what a load of crap that is!  Certainly, Paul, being subject to the will of the Roman Emperor, that SOB Nero, and tried his best to prevent the persecution of Christians by imploring them to be good citizens of the empire.  But, he didn’t imply that such obedience was absolute.  Just look at what immediately follows the above in the same epistle:

The commandments,.. are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

So what takes priority if the authorities asks their subjects to do something that is against the fulfillment of that law?  Should the Germans in 1930s blindly have followed Hitler as so many of them did? If the authorities tell you to murder your neighbor, do you do it?

Where do you draw the moral line?

It’s like I always say, “I gave you a brain, humanity.  Now, use it!”

Well, it’s getting late here and I really need to catch up on my rest.  This sort of idiocy raises my blood pressure much too high.  So I’ll call it a night.  Talk to you in a while.

Be good.  You always are.

Affectionally,

G

King David?

Ever notice how evangelists and other extreme ”Christian” groups defend their support of Donald Trump by comparing him to the Jewish king David from the Old Testament. Their argument goes that King David was a fallable sinner, like Trump is, but God use David to advance His glory. What they always forget to mention that both he and the people of Israel were punished for his sins. Sorry, people, but I’m not too keen on getting a plague because of. Trump!

AND NOW A MESSAGE FROM A SPECIAL GUEST

While our normal commentator is busy with other maters, we bring you a very special guest with an important message:

Hi, you all!  Lucifer, the morning star,  light-bringer, Satanall, the Dragon, the Devil, good old Satan to most of you.  Oh yes, also sometimes called the “Prince of this World’—and don’t I wish I were!  Boy, things would be a hell (no pun intended) of a lot different around here, believe me.

First of all, let’s get it straight.  This whole evil, thing.  Not me.  Not my job (again, no pun intended for those of you who read the book).  Really, it’s all a big misunderstanding.  Hey, blame the prophet Zarathustra for coming up with the whole idea of two opposing entities in the Universe, Ahura Mazda ( “the Good Lord”) and Angra Mainyu (“the Evil Spirit”) or Ahrinan.  Later, when the Jews had been conquered by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar and exiled there, they took over the idea.  Then, some bozo had to go translate the  Hebrew word הֵילֵל in Isaiah (Isaiah 14:12) as “Lucifer” in the King James Bible.

I mean, there I was–minding God’s business like a good angel should–helping him become an even better God by pointing out where He might be going wrong–you know, playing devil’s advocate (damn, this unintentional puns–can’t escape them, can you?)–and then one day—zap, I’m suddenly this evil, horrible creature trying to seduce His creation into evil.

What are you people anyway?  You’re not all Donald Trumps–nothing is ever your fault, it’s always someone trying to ruin your good name. Hello!  Take some goddamn responsibility for yourselves, humanity.  I’m not the one blowing up children and mothers as you keep finding newer and more sadistic ways of destroying each other.  It’s not me that makes idiot fanatics crash cars and trucks into innocent bystanders in a perverted sense of what makes God great.  I am not the one who makes you rape.  I’m not the one who thinks that it’s okay to build more and more weapons of destruction at the cost of food, medicine, and shelter for the poor and the weak.  I do not plunder and destroy this beautiful planet–the only home you have–in the name of profit.

I am not the one who puts greed and indifference over the value of a human life.

I am not he who condemns others to hell (in this world or in the next) because their skin color is not mine, their land of origin is different than mine, their culture and beliefs seem strange to me., or because they call God by a different name that I do.   I am not the one going to your churches, mosques, synagogues to pray to your God in self-righteousness when you continually break the first and only important rule of all religions: “Do to others as you would have them do to you“.

Stop blaming me.  I’m not the Devil of this world–You are! Do not keep listening to your fears and the whispers of men (not me!) who would keep you in darkness for their own advantage. Do not give into the worst side of your spirit when God infused you with the light to bring forth heaven on this poor planet.

The world is only made what it is by your actions

The world can only be made holy by listening to your heart.

Thank you for listening,

Lucifer

Go(o)d and Evil

This post was inspired by an article written by a very dear friend for her local paper.  If you are interested, her article can be found at No Evil.  The original is in Greek, but an English translation by the author is included

So this post may go somewhat off the usual topics, but I felt the need to write it.

Our world.  How can anyone look at the world presented to us on cable news, the Internet, newspapers, etc., and not be horrified at what seems to be daily occurrences of evil:

  • wars between countries that are enemies today, and will becomes allies in the future against some other perceived common enemy
  • the slaughter of innocent children, babies barely out of their mother’s wombs
  • the murder of parents before their children’s eyes.
  • the willful starvation of those caught in man-made Armageddons
  • the sadistic cruelty that justifies the torture and maiming of  our fellow humans
  • the destruction of children’s innocence

And so much more can be added to this list that the heavens should cry out in agony.

But they don’t!

And millions read their Bibles, their Qur’ans, their Gitas, their Surtras, in some attempt to answer their despairing question:

Why does  God allow such evil in this world?

It’s the wrong question.  Yes, certainly we use our religions as weapons to justify our hate of those who think differently.  We can pull passages from our holy books where our God seems to order us to commit terrible sins in His name.  But a God who needs men to perform such deeds for Him is no God at all, just a pathetic and weak reflection of the worst of us   A good part of I’m God ands You’re Not explores this, possibly to the point of ad nauseam.

Okay, you say, let’s take religion out of it.  You still have earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunamis, volcanoes, floods.  Aren’t these evil?  Certainly, these cause terrible tragedies and suffering to all living things,  but unless the planet is intelligent after all and is trying to wipe out the human plague that infests it, no, these are not evil.  Arguments about global warming aside, these are the natural phenomena of the planet–there is no intent, no thought behind them.  We just happen to be here when they occur.

For Evil requires intelligence behind it.  The earth is not sadistic, humans are.  It is we  who intentionally blow each other up, cause the loss of arms and legs (sometimes physically performing the act, sometimes through our war machines where individuals only exist to be counted as the enemy dead), we who send back boats of desperate refugees while we suppress the knowledge that we are most likely sending them back to living hell or death, we who built concentration camps and tolerate the Holocausts of the innocents.  Only an intelligent human being  can be so insanely stupid as to hate another human being merely for where he/she comes from, the clothes they wear, the way they worship or don’t worship a God.

And now in America, the nation of immigrants, hate raises it head.  Follow on a  blog or on Facebook, you can read such insanity as threats of civil war because conservatives and liberals have different views–I have read death threats to both sides  on the Facebook pages of American politicians and political groups, where there seems to be a new vision of an America that cannot tolerate the very differences that it was founded on, forgetting the promise and ideals that made it the “Golden Land” of opportunity and a light to the world.

Is such sadism ingrained in us?  Is there some part of our unconscious that relishes the idea of such torture and cruelty, that contains a spark of evil in all of us?  Even though we would never condone such actions in the physical world, are we playing holier-than-thou and are unwillingly to acknowledge that under the right set of circumstances. we are blood-thirsty little gods and goddesses of vengeance?

To which wiser men than me have answered that you can have the thought, you are NOT the thought.  Throughout history, better men than me have stood up before evil and said “No!”, even at the cost of losing their lives to that very evil,  martyrs that lead the way to the best inside us.

Why should I hate you to the point of seeking your death merely for being different from me?  Why should I be so insecure, so little a person,  to feel so threatened that I become a betrayer of the ideals I hold sacred?   For what do I become less than the best in me?

What kind of world do you wish to leave behind?  One, better for you having existed, or one that only causes more and greater misery.

No, the question isn’t why does God allow such evil to exist; the question is why do we do.
