Leave Me Out of This

One of the disadvantages of being God is that you wind up getting blamed for things you didn’t have anything to do with (like sending floods to show my divine wrath), and then you get thanked for doing things that no self-respecting God would have any part of.

Let’s get this straight.  Stop saying that I had anything to do with your elections, who the candidates were, and more importantly don’t say I sent the winner to you.  I mean, look–just look at who you have running your countries!  Do you think I’m out of my ever-loving mind?!  You people claim you follow me, that you are good Christians, Jews, what-ever, and then you go out of your way to elect idiots who do everything in their power to betray what I stand for.

And further more, those kings and queens and such do NOT rule by any divine right.  They are just ordinary people who’s ancestors managed to pillage and rape enough to become powerful enough to do whatever the hell (and I do mean, hell) they wanted.

So, please, especially you Americans, cut it out!  I hate getting political about this, but don’t blame me for that person in the White House.  You did that by yourself, rightly or wrongly.

Though if I were you, I’d be praying that I have mercy on your poor souls.

Hello out there

I know, I know… I’ve been awful quiet. Maybe you were even wondering if I was alive.

OK I was in hiding.

I’ve survived your wars, your taking my name in vain, your almost willful twisting of the best moral and ethical ideas that humanity has developed in its pursuit of Me, your hatred of strangers, your killing of innocents.

Repeating cycles of cruelty and horror, leading to the creation of more refugees who you reject, while you forget that at some point you or your ancestors were once refugees too.  Are you oblivious enough that you forget the duties to the stranger, which was the most sacred rule of all?  The Golden Rule which you are all fond of mentioning in your sermons as you crush it underfoot?

Looking  at your history over the past 100 years or so…it’s enough to make Me sick!  Even God can only take so much, you know!

So, yes, I ran away.

And what did I come back to?  Trump, Clinton, Kin Jong-un, Putin, Erdogan,  etc, etc.   Corruption masking as virtue.  Really, humanity?  This is the best you can produce?  Have you truly lost your collective mind?

Then again, what should I expect from a species that thinks I have a vested interest in who wins a soccer game!

Sigh

And could you please, please stop saying that I selected Trump, or any of the other bozos to save you.  Don’t blame me for your own stupidity.  I had nothing to do with this insanity. None of these disgraces are the Messiah.  Perhaps more of the Anti-Christ if anything at all.

Look, I get it   You want to be saved   You want to feel you and the little worlds you have surrounded yourselves are righteous and holy.  Some of you want Daddy to come out of the sky, wave His arms, and justify your existence by exalting you and poof!, make it all okay with His special milk and cookies

It doesn’t work like that.  Never has. Never will.  Because I am NOT about any of that.  Take a good look at yourself humanity.  Thousands of years…you still do the two-step-forward-one-step-back waltz that’s been going on since your ancestors crawled out of the slime.  Well, at least you wind up going forward–although it seems  at times to be an excruciating slow march.

No, you are going to have to save yourself  You are going to have to face your delusions, find the better part of yourself, and bring it forth   You want justice? Be a force of justice.  You want peace.  Be the peace.  You want a world where children don’t cry themselves to sleep because they don’t have enough food, or their mother was raped and murdered before their eyes?   It’s up to you!

You want holiness in your world   Be holy.   Stop worrying about if your neighbor is gay, or worships differently than you do, or has a different skin color than yours.  If you can’t understand their language, look into their eyes with an open heart.

You will understand.

And it won’t be a matter of “I’m God and You’re Not”.   Because you will have brought Me forth in you and made Us one.

Is God worthy of worship? Part 2

So, after much struggle, I came to the conclusion that either I had to abandon the idea of God or change my understanding of what God is.  I simply could not accept that God as an entity looking down from somewhere in the sky, watching to catch human beings who failed to measure up to the flimsiest of His standards and condemning them to eternal punishments—whatever they actually were, for was the truth in the Old Testament, the New Testament, the Qur’an,  the Vedas, or some other so-called Word of God?  How could someone who ate milk with meat be worthy of the same punishments as a mass murderer?

And further, where was truth when there are so many different religions claiming to have the absolute one.  Obviously, they can’t all be correct!  So, perhaps none of them are.   Certainly God isn’t going around on social media and telling us which one is actually The Truth!

So I was left with the question:  How do you bring God into the world?

But if you examine the religions, there is usually one simple rule that they have in common : the Golden Rule, “Do to others as you would wish they would do to you.”  Maybe the form is different, but that simple statement is largely there.

So that became the foundation, even though, I admit, I sometimes fail.

But take it a step forward into what seems obvious but is so misinterpreted, I think.  And for simplicity, I’ll use the words of Jesus of Nazareth–for whom I always had a strong fascination even as a Jewish child.

“The kingdom of God is within you'”(Luke 17:21)

Repeat that to yourself a couple of times with an emphasis on those last three words. Let I sink in until you achieve that “a-ha” moment.

We look outside ourselves,  waiting for some supernatural being to come down and put things to right.  Just for example, Christianity has been waiting almost 2,000 years since the death of Christ for Him to return in splendor and initiate that kingdom.  Judaism waits for ha-Mashiach.   Islam,  al-Masih.   And so on, and so on…

We keep waiting, and waiting….Like misbehaved children, waiting for Daddy to come home.

But Daddy isn’t coming.

In a manner of speaking, Daddy is waiting for us.

And we are so sure of the righteousness of our beliefs that we will kill for them, we will oppress our brothers and sisters for them, we will consign them to the deepest parts of whatever Hell we can imagine for not agreeing with us.  We damn those who are different, who do not conform to our way of life.  And we expect a God to bring us his kingdom?

No, hate and self-righteousness only keeps that kingdom further away.  Because it is not for God to bring that kingdom to us, it is for us to bring the kingdom to God.

It starts within us.  With how we treat each other, with how we approach the world—do you expect a kingdom of God to be created out of hate?

It calls for a revolution of the human heart.  So if I wish to see that kingdom come, it has to start with me.  It has to come from what is within me!  I must endeavor to bring God—or better, whatever I can conceive the idea of God to be–into the world from out of my actions, from the way I live my live.  Love can only be brought into the world by being loving.. Compassion by being compassionate.  Trust by being trustworthy.  Understanding by trying to be understanding.  Comfort by being comforting.  Hope by giving hope.

And when that spreads from one human soul to another, and keeps spreading…then you have created the kingdom

Then you bring God into this hurt and cyring world.

Is God worthy of worship (part 1)

I have struggled with my understanding of the nature of God for almost all my life — from my bar mitzvah days, through my teen years where my doubts about the Bible caused my father to often call me an “atheist”, and through my adult life all these years, as I explored different religions and philosophies.

Events in my life would often convince me that God didn’t like me very much and was often out to get me.  Among other areas were issues with marriage, my issues with my looks,  love life, and the sense of despair that hit when I found out that my only child was autistic.  Rightly or wrongly, I often felt like a fly captured by a schoolboy who delights in slowly pulling its legs off, one after the after.

And what kind of God existed that seemingly stood silent during the Armenian genocide in the beginning of the 20th Century, the Holocaust of the Second World War, the continued poverty and suffering of so many innocents across the world., a God that watches as madmen invoke His name as they kill those of different faiths or beliefs, a world continued to be bathed in blood.

And even in nature, there are horrors:  what sort of a worshipful God would come up with things like parasitic wasps that “impregnate” a caterpillar with its eggs.  The caterpillar continues to eat and grow while the larvae suck its blood and grow as well.  Then the wasp larvae use their specialized jagged jaws to cut through the tough, thick layers of the caterpillar’s skin that would otherwise present an impermeable barrier. The larvae also release chemicals that paralyze their host, rendering it powerless as they eat their way out.

Who comes up with elephantiasis? Bubonic plague? Ebola?

This is the creation of a loving God? Or is it the work of a sadist?

And do not say who are we to question the ways of God. If a parent tortures a child, is that okay because he is the parent?

No, if this is willful of God, than that God is NOT worthy of worship. That God is not worthy of us.

So, I am left to conclude that IF this is God, I have to disown him. I cannot believe in such a God

Or I must come to a different understanding of what God is.

When your holy book tells you your belief system is immoral, just rewrite the holy book!

‘Conservapedia’ seeks to crowdsource right-wing version of the Bible.

Because they know what the writers really, truly meant.  This is funny, sad, and troubling at the same time.

No wonder religions today rarely reflect what their founders actually preached!
